Early 70's music scene
Early 70's music scene the Beatles were breaking up in April 1970, The Jackson 5 were rising as the new pop sensation of the early seventies, while the Motown sound continued to incorporate more funk. This era still featured a lot of lyrically strong songs such as "Imagine" by John Lennon and "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. It also marked the beginning of a more glam-oriented rock such as "Get It On (Bang A Gong) by T. Rex. Some of the early hard rock artists such as Black Sabbath began to appear. The development and influence of Jamaican reggae could be felt in hits by Johnny Nash.
Early 80's music scene​
​​The early eighties marked a recession for the music industry but certain artists such as AC/DC and Pink Floyd enjoyed huge success. The pop charts had tapped out on disco by the end 1981 and began to lean in an adult contemporary direction that deeply embraced Journey and Hall & Oates. The Michael Jackson album Thriller in late 1982, along with the Prince album 1999 helped usher in an era of r&b-spirited dance music. Country music also made a mark, especially with Dolly Parton's hit "9 To 5."

Early 90's music scene
​Top 40 radio made a big transition in the early 90s toward hip hop, rap and ballads. Mariah Carey emerged as an R&B and pop crossover artist, as the charts became flooded with a more electronic lush arrangements that leaned toward adult contemporary on one hand and edgier dance beats for younger audiences on the other hand. For many people it was all the same processed big business formula and they sought an alternative to this new mainstream.
